Therapy for Lives Inside and Outside the Box.

Laura A. Jacobs, LCSW-R: Psychotherapist, Activist, Author, Presenter... Heretic*

I believe we all can live rewarding, empowered lives.                       (845) 304-7915

Straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, pansexual, asexual, trans*, transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, gender nonconforming, kinky, BDSM, vanilla, monogamous, single, polyamorous… regardless of our lifestyle, our identity, or our background, we all have struggles.  We all have suffered from past trauma.  We all have difficult relationships.  We all seek happiness.

Life is not about finding yourself... it’s about creating yourself.
— G. B. Shaw

Therapy can be a difficult process of both exploring the past and creating the future.  As someone trans* and genderqueer-identified, I intimately understand the terrible effects of stigma, discrimination, trauma, and depression on an individual's life.  I seek to establish a comfortable environment in which we can work together, safely asking questions and making empowered decisions about to move forward, while simultaneously investigating questions of meaning.

Our initial sessions will be to get to know each other and to establish a trusting relationship on which we can gradually address issues with more depth.

Experienced with individuals, families, and couples, LGBTQ and alternate lifestyles, artistic professionals, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, grief and bereavement, addiction, and more, as well as in issues of marginalization and otherness, I am happy to work with people from adolescents to the elderly, of all orientations and expressions.

Let's collaborate to create the richest, happiest life for you possible.

New Piece:

Hormones & Handcuffs

How many trans or gender nonconforming people are involved in BDSM, nonmonogamy, or other forms of alternate lifestyles?  Actual numbers do not exist, but anecdotal evidence suggests percentages are significantly higher than in cisgender (non-transgender) populations.  Why?

Special thanks to Manhattan Alternative, a network of therapeutic service providers in New YorkCity who are sex-positive, affirmative, and have expertise related to issues that kink, poly, consensually non-monogamous, trans, gender non-conforming, and/or LGBQ-identified individuals face.

From A to T:

Advice For Trans* and Gender Nonconforming Youth, Adolescents, Families, and Allies!

From A to T: a new, semi-regular feature in which I'll address questions from youth and adolescents who identify as trans*, transgender, gender nonconforming, genderqueer, genderfluid, gender expansive, androgynous, agender, bigender, demigender, or otherwise nonbinary, as well as from families, educators, school counselors, therapists, or any other allies.

We know that younger people in the trans* community -- our community, my community -- can be especially vulnerable. There is awareness, but confusion. It is difficult to know where to seek guidance. I'll do my best.
