Callen-Lorde

Former Chair, Board of Directors, the Callen-Lorde Community Health Center.

In July, 2016 I was appointed the Chair of the Board for this wonderful organization. With a legacy dating back to the days of Stonewall, Callen-Lorde is a world leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare whose mission is to provide high quality, compassionate health care to the LGBTQ+ community of New York City, regardless of ability to pay. I became the first trans-identified person to hold this position here or at any of the LGBTQ+ health centers.

My term expired June 10, 2020 (around 8:45PM). It was truly a joy and privilege to serve as Chair, and thank you to the staff, management, and the rest of the Board for making me look good. Now I return to being a Member-at-Large, and hope to use my experience to aid the new leadership.

Over the 50 years of its' history, Callen-Lorde has grown from a grass-roots project  into one of the largest LGBTQ+ health centers in the nation providing over 100,000 visits a year. With an annual budget of $100 Million, we recently opened a fourth clinical location - a 25,000 square foot facility in downtown Brooklyn. We provide millions of dollars of unreimbursed care to those with no ability to pay.

My term limits expired in 2021, so I no longer serve on the Board. Yet this organization remains dear to me personally; I have been a client there since the beginning of my own transition and still receive my healthcare there today.

A warm ‘thank you’ to staff and management who every day provide care to those in need.

Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.
